Metropolitan Group is excited to announce the purchase and renovation of the National Historic Landmark and LEED Silver Balfour-Guthrie Building into a modern, creative office, collaborative and convening space. Beginning late spring 2020, our MG headquarters will occupy the majority of the building, showcasing a thoughtfully designed space that fosters collaboration, creativity and community gathering. The building is located on 733 S.W, Oak St. in Portland, Oregon.
The Public Will Building combines historic character at its core design by iconic Portland architect Morris Whitehouse, and was extensively renovated and modernized in 2003 by Thomas Hacker & Associates with complete upgrades, including a significant seismic retrofit and all new building systems. The renovation also includes the addition of conference spaces, flex and private offices, and a full kitchen, surrounded by monumental glass walls to maintain the natural light and visual impact of the historic windows throughout. Other features of this renovation include polished historic concrete and terrazzo floors, updated lighting design, all new bathrooms and showers, bike parking and Oregon white oak detailing throughout the space.
The building is rated a walker’s, biker’s and transit rider’s “paradise,” is located just steps away from Powell’s Books and the gateway to the Pearl District to the west and the heart of downtown (across the street from the Benson Hotel) to the east. The beloved Alder Street food cart pod that was displaced by the construction of the Ritz Carlton will open surrounding a revitalized Ankeny Square in the back of The Public Will Building.
