Staff spotlight: Kiernan Doherty

Our Portland office lead, executive vice president Kiernan, is an accomplished communication professional and an integral member of MG’s executive team. She is also a founding member and the recent president of Levé, an all-volunteer organization that “lifts” and supports annual nonprofit partners through volunteer and fundraising efforts while also inspiring younger generations to get involved in the success of the local nonprofit community. Founded in 2004, Levé has raised more than $215,000 for area nonprofits.

Levé’s board is made up of 13 women professionals and more than 20 committee members. Each year they identify a new local nonprofit to support, serving as their volunteers, advocates, and fundraisers. The capstone of the partnership is Levé’s signature Charity Ball event, after which all proceeds are donated as unrestricted funds. The goal is to introduce the nonprofit partner to a new generation of donors while exposing event-goers to the needs of the local community, hopefully creating bonds that continue long after this initial exposure.

Past partner nonprofits have included p:ear, Mercy Corps International, the YWCA of Greater Portland, Friends of the Children-Portland, Schoolhouse Supplies, Growing Gardens, Children’s Cancer Association, and Loaves & Fishes Centers. Currently, Levé is partnered with the Oregon chapter of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation.

Central to their mission is Levé‘s goal to help nonprofit organizations widen their footprint in the community and expand their donor base. They do this by providing a platform from which to publicize the essential work they do, which they hope will create a positive impact well beyond the year of partnership with Levé itself. Sign up for Levé’s e-newsletter, follow them on Facebook, or visit the website to learn more about their partnerships.

Kiernan has been a force within Levé. She was a founding board member, served as the peer-elected board president from 2009-2011, and is currently serving on the executive and marketing & communication committees. For “I Have a Dream Oregon” Oregon, Kiernan is supporting their branding and messaging initiative, allowing her to use her experience and expertise gained at MG in support of IHAD’s success.

Over the past few years, Kiernan and Levé have garnered recognition for their important contributions, including the 2010 Oregon Governor’s Volunteer Award for Outstanding Volunteer Program, the Girl’s Inc. Power of the Purse Purse-o-nality commendation, a White Rose honor bestowed by the March of Dimes, and—most recently—the Willamette Valley Development Officers’ Crystal Award for fundraising excellence.

Kiernan and her colleagues at Levé are a model for harnessing the power of voice; they have created meaningful and lasting change by combining their smarts and talents with a passion for philanthropy and value on community. Cheers to their continued success and growth!
